Thoughts, pictures, technology and other such nonsense...
Unfortunately, after a week of intense testing of the service, I can’t recommend it, at least not in its current state. It’s a great idea, but, as of now, MobileMe has too many flaws to keep its promises.
Walt Mossberg is about as impressed as I am with Apple’s new MobileMe service.

It feels a little like Apple got swept up in knocking down every single detraction point from 1.0 that they lost sight of what everyone loved about the first version. Yes, it got cheaper (not really), faster (some times), installable apps, and GPS, but it lost a bit of Apple soul in the process.

I’d been planning on writing a piece about my disappointment with the iPhone 2.0 software upgrade for a while but this DHH piece absolutely nails it.

Personal gripes

  • Spending an entire weekend with an iBrick after Apple’s iTunes activation servers died (Serves me right for trying to update the same hour the update was released, just before having to leave for a weekend vacation!)
  • Having the entire phone UI degrade horribly. As DHH remarks, everything now feels fragile. Slow, randomly freezing, crashing, jittery animations - so un-Apple.
  • MobileMe ‘push’ updating a blatant lie.
  • ‘Locate Me’ feature in Maps has taken a huge step backwards. I used to show this feature off to people to impress them with the iPhone. It always used to locate me incredibly accurately (using GPS triangulation/WiFi). Now it routinely pinpoints me as being miles from my actual location. How this feature can have regressed so badly is beyond me.

Here’s hoping that a 2.0.1 update is just around the corner and that it’s shown a bit more tlc than this mess.
