SpringSource have released their own proprietary application server based on Tomcat & OSGi. Their website announces the news with much fanfare - “SpringSource Redefines Application Server Market”. Well blow me down.
Interesting that they’ve chosen to use the GPLv3 license rather than the Apache v2 license that the rest of the Spring framework is released under. Also ironic that many of the best ideas in there have been available in ATG Dynamo/Nucleus for a long long time (module dependencies, admin console, sensible logging and so on)
Don’t get me wrong - I’m a big fan of the Spring framework and have been a Spring evangelist within many companies. There are a lot of neat ideas and good practices wrapped within the SpringSource Application Platform (SSAP?!), but do we really need another application server?
